Ao Nang 7/10
Ao Nang in Krabi is your quintessential beach town with a decent mix of relaxation and tourism. The beach is nice enough, though it does get a bit crowded with fellow vacationers. The town itself tends to reminded more of Spain than Thailand, with it’s row of happy hour restaurants and bumbling brits. At night it becomes a-bit of a party haven and the floods of bars open their doors with loud obnoxious remixes. There is some nice nature and cultural spots around but you’ll have to travel a-bit further out.
Hostel Recommendations
Nomads Hostel
Right on the beachfront, making it super convenient for beach access and sunset views. The social vibe here is a standout feature—whether you’re looking to chill out or make new friends, there are plenty of opportunities to engage with fellow travelers. The facilities are good but not extravagant, which is more than made up for by the hostel’s lively common areas and beachside location. If you’re after a fun, social atmosphere and don’t mind basic amenities, this is a solid choice.
Food Spots
- Café 8.98: A reliable spot for a tasty meal that won’t break the bank. Café 8.98 offers a mix of Thai and Western dishes in a relaxed environment, making it a great option for a casual bite.
- Carnivore Steak and Grill: Craving a quality steak? Carnivore Steak and Grill serves up hearty meals at a higher price point but with excellent flavor and generous portions.
- Bubba’s Coffee Bar: A popular choice for breakfast and brunch, Bubba’s Coffee Bar serves fresh, locally sourced dishes with a focus on healthy options. Known for its artisanal coffee, smoothie bowls, and avocado toasts, it’s a cozy spot to relax and recharge before exploring the island.
Worthwhile Activities
- Kayak to Hong Islands: Rent a kayak and paddle your way to the tranquil Hong Islands. It’s a great way to escape the main tourist areas and enjoy some peaceful time on secluded beaches.
- Bat Cave Hike at Khao Ngon Nak: Take a hike to the Bat Cave, a hidden gem often missed by tourists. Located on the way to Khao Ngon Nak (Dragon Crest Mountain), this small, eerie cave is home to a colony of bats and offers a unique, offbeat adventure. It’s a great way to experience local wildlife and enjoy a bit of mystery in the jungle.
- Nopparat Thara Mangrove Exploration: Head to the lesser-known Nopparat Thara mangroves for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. You can explore the intricate waterways by kayak or small boat, discovering hidden wildlife, bird-watching spots, and serene natural surroundings far from the crowds.
Nights Out
The nightlife in Ao Nang is active, but it often feels like a standard night out rather than something particularly distinctive. Expect a mix of bars and pubs that cater to a broad crowd, filled with your classic club remixes playing so loud you can’t hear yourself think
Chao Ley Bar- A laid-back spot where you can enjoy a drink and meet other travelers. The vibe is relaxed, making it a good place to unwind after a day of exploring.
O’Malley’s Irish Bar- If you’re missing a taste of home, O’Malley’s offers familiar pub fare and a range of beers. It’s a cozy spot for a classic Irish pub experience.
Bangkok 8.7/10
Bangkok, a city of tuk-tuks, temples, and tasty street food where chaos meets charm. You can visit a serene temple, haggle at a busy market, and finish the day with a rooftop cocktail, all in a few blocks. My only reference to the city prior to visiting it was from the Hangover, and I have to say my opinion didn’t change much as a result. Whether you’re a traveler on a budget or trying to splash the cash, this city really offers it all. The traffic is a manic as expected, so I’d advise you to walk where you can or take the boat taxi.

NapPark Hostel
Great for meeting people without sacrificing sleep. The beds are comfy, the facilities are clean, and you won’t wake up with bed bug souvenirs. It’s close to the action for convenience but tucked away enough for some peace and quiet. The staff are friendly and always ready with a smile and some solid local tips. The common areas are perfect for making new friends, whether you’re looking for a crew to explore with or just someone to share a beer.
Food Spots
- Thipsamai Pad Thai- If you haven’t had Pad Thai at Thipsamai, did you even go to Bangkok? This place serves what many argue is the best Pad Thai in the city, possibly the world. Reasonably priced and totally delicious, it’s worth the inevitable queue.
- Jay Fai- Want to try Michelin-starred street food? Jay Fai is the place. Yes, it’s more expensive than your average street stall, but her famous crab omelet is worth every baht. Plus, you can brag to everyone back home that you dined at a Michelin-starred spot.
- Raan Jay Fai- Famous for its crab omelet and drunken noodles, this place will blow your taste buds away. It’s not the cheapest, but it’s worth every baht. Just be ready for a wait – good things take time.
Worthwhile Activities
- Bang Sue Junction for Vintage Shopping- Forget the tourist traps and head to Bang Sue Junction for some vintage shopping. You’ll find unique clothes and trinkets that you won’t see everyone else wearing. Plus, bargaining here is part of the fun.
- Go Karting at EasyKart Bangkok- For a bit of adrenaline, head to EasyKart for some go-karting fun. It’s not your typical Bangkok activity, but it’s a blast and a great way to beat the heat.
- Airplane Graveyard- This hidden gem is for those who love the unusual. Explore abandoned planes in the middle of Bangkok – it’s eerie, fascinating, and makes for some great photos.
Nights Out
Khao San Road is often touted as the nightlife epicenter, but honestly, it’s more of a chaotic mess of drunken tourists and tacky bars. If you’re into that, by all means, dive in. But for a classier night out, head to Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar. They have bottomless cocktails and a view that makes you feel on top of the world. Plus, the drinks are way better than anything you’ll get on Khao San.
Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar- For a night out with a bit of class, head to Octave for bottomless cocktails and a view that’s worth the slightly higher price tag. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring the city.
Iron Fairies- This bar is quirky, dark, and full of character. With unique decor and creative cocktails, it’s a great alternative to the typical Bangkok night out.
Chiang Mai 7.7/10
A city that hosts the most temples in Thailand and the smallest bookshop in the world. Chiang Mai was rich with culture and activities; however, much of this came at a steep price, which brings it down in my books. I know Chiang Mai is extremely highly rated, but this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I thought the city itself was quite average. Now in saying that, there are a bunch of interesting things to see and do, but a lot of it requires you to travel a bit further out. It is also extremely cheap, which is a bonus for all the budget-minded among us.

The common areas are perfect for making new friends, whether you’re looking for a crew to explore with or just someone to share a beer with.
Food Spots
- Ginger & Kafe- Think of a hipster café where Thai street food decided to go on a fancy vacation. You’ve got the best of both worlds: mango sticky rice that wants to be a supermodel and coffee so strong it could power a tuk-tuk for a week.
- Dash! Restaurant and Bar- A wooden house that looks like it could’ve been plucked from a Thai fairytale, where the prince is probably a bowl of Khao Soi and the princess is a plate of Pad Thai. And the live music? Let’s just say it’s better than your shower singing.
- The Hideout- Picture your favourite lazy Sunday hangout, but with sandwiches so big they should come with a warning label. They’ve got breakfast so delicious you’ll consider making it a three-meal-a-day situation, and smoothies that might just make you forget you’re on vacation and not in a tropical health retreat.
Worthwhile Activities
- Mekong Catfish Fishing: In the outer banks of the city, there is a lake where you can fish for catfish weighing upwards of 40 kg. Un-ironically, one of the best actives we did, super cheap and full of locals teaching you how to fish. The only downside was watching small Thia children catch 10X the amount of fish as you. Make sure you pay on the door rather than online, as it was about half the price (worked out at about £10 per person with a £20).
- Canyon Waterpark: Maybe not as unusual due to the high popularity, but I had to put it in the section as it was very different from a lot of the activities you’d do whilst travelling. Throw all ideas of the rich culture found in this city and run a round like a child on an island of inflatable obstacles. You’ll find waterparks with the removal of all those pesky health and safety regulations can actually make for an enjoyable day out. It costs around £17 for a day ticket with a few added buy-ons if you want to indulge in a zip line or two.
Nights Out
You’ll find most of the bars and clubs are dotted in and around the Old City, with some half-decent night markets as well. If you want my opinion, this place is severely overrated; it gives real prime Ayia Napa strip vibes. Some of the places slightly further out of this area are nice, and we heard some good live performances, but overall, nothing special about the nightlife at all.
Zoe Yellow- The most popular bar in town and the epicentre of terrible music. This place actually has some cool vibes about it; however, the dance floor can become a little claustrophobic.
BYB – UNDERGROUND CNX- If you want a slightly different music scene compared to the waves of pop songs found in some of the more ‘western bars’, this place is the spot. Who knew Chiang Mai had an underground techno scene?
Chiang Rai- Stop Over Time
Famous for it’s white and blue temple and not much else. Chiang Rai is better used as a stopover town before taking the slow boat into Laos. If you’re culturally inclined, there’s definitely enough there to make a day out of, but there is nothing in the way of good nights out and socialisation.
Slow Boat- Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang
100% Book the slow boat as a package through your hostel in Chiang Mai and Pai. The process of getting through the border and getting to the dock can be quite complicated, and having a company walk you through it makes it a whole lot easier. Now the slow boat is far from a Disney cruise, and there is not much in the way of luxury emanates. The on-board cafe also possibly possesses one of the poorest selections of food and drinks known to man, so make sure to stock up on some goodies before embarking on the journey.
The boat takes two days, with the first night stopping at a small town known as Pak Beng. Where you stay is practically irrelevant in this town, as none of the hostels offer much in the way of festivities. Whilst you’re there, make sure to check out the Happy Bar, which has a surprisingly good atmosphere for a town so small. In order to line the stomach before, make sure to visit the Hasan Restaurant, which actually has several locations throughout Laos and genuinely provides a bloody good curry.
I advise you to be sensible in your short time at the town, unless you don’t mind a raging hangover on a small, rickety boat. Trust me on that one from a position of experience. After your second day on the boat, take me on that one from a position of experience. Laos, you will arrive in the second biggest city in Laos, Luang Prabang.
Khao Sok 8/10
Khao Sok is like a tropical dream come true, with its lush rainforests and dramatic limestone formations. If you’re into nature and want a break from the beach, this national park is the perfect retreat. The real magic here is the serene atmosphere and unique experiences like floating bungalows and bizarre tours that you won’t find elsewhere. While the nightlife is almost non-existent (unless you count the occasional town bar), the park’s stunning landscapes and activities are more than enough to keep you entertained.
Hostel Recommendations
Khao Sok Floating Bungalows
Notable Features: Staying in floating bungalows on the lake is an experience like no other. Imagine waking up to the sound of water lapping against your cabin and stepping out to views of misty limestone peaks. The accommodations are rustic but charming, and the location is unbeatable for exploring the park. It’s a bit basic, but the experience of staying on the water makes up for it. It’s the ideal base for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Khao Sok.
Food Spots
- Chao Italian Restaurant- If you’re craving a break from local fare, Chao Italian Restaurant offers some delicious Italian dishes. It’s a bit of a treat in a region known for its Thai cuisine, and the pasta and pizza are surprisingly good.

- Cheow Lan Lake Floating Village- Visit the floating village on Cheow Lan Lake for a unique perspective on the area. You can explore the floating homes and take in the stunning scenery from the water. It’s a bizarre but fascinating way to experience the park.
Koh Lanta 7.9/10
Koh Lanta is the quintessential island getaway if you’re looking to escape the frenzy of more tourist-packed spots. It offers a relaxed atmosphere, where days are best spent lounging on less-crowded beaches and evenings are perfect for unwinding rather than going wild. While it may not be the most thrilling destination in Thailand, its laid-back charm and natural beauty provide a refreshing change of pace.

Nights Out
Koh Lanta’s nightlife is more laid-back, offering a relaxed vibe perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. While it may not be the island’s biggest draw, there are still some great spots to enjoy a drink and good company.
Blanco’s Hostel: The go-to spot for nightlife on Koh Lanta, Blanco’s Hostel brings the energy with fun events and nightly trips to different party spots around the island. It’s a great place to meet fellow travelers and kick off your night.

Koh Phangan 8.3/10
Koh Phangan, where the full moon isn’t just a phase but a full-blown spectacle. This island is renowned for its epic parties, and while the Full Moon Party is the star of the show, there’s a lot more to Koh Phangan if you’re willing to explore beyond the chaos. The main beach where the Full Moon Party is held can get a bit grubby, but wander to the island’s quieter corners, and you’ll discover some truly stunning spots. Perfect for a mix of wild nights and serene days.

Nights Out
Koh Phangan’s nightlife is legendary, and it’s no surprise why. The island knows how to throw a party, with events that cater to all tastes. The Full Moon Party is a must-experience, but it’s not the only highlight on the island.
Full Moon Party: Held monthly, this iconic beach bash is a riot of neon paint, thumping beats, and fire shows. It’s chaotic but exhilarating, and definitely worth checking out if you’re on the island during the full moon.
Jungle Party: Set in the heart of the island’s lush jungle, the Jungle Party is another great night out. Packed with three big stages blurring out heavy electronic music, this sea of colours and lasers boasts one of the best parties in Asia.
Eden Party: The best party on the island is often overlooked. Eden Party is only accessible via boat, and you’ll see lots of fishermen waiting along the shore, ready to transport you to a small shore where the party is located. You’ll find it hard to find much information or pictures of this party due to its secret nature, but trust me, it’s something not worth missing.
Koh Phi Phi 9.2/10
Koh Phi Phi, the home of the legendary Maya Bay from Leonardo Di Caprio’s ‘the beach’. The island is overall stunning and has loads of different activities to engage with. At its heart, Phi Phi is a party island and hosts some of the most famous bars and parties in Thailand. Not much to complain about here, apart from the hostel options being a bit limited.
Hostel Recommendations
Blanco’s
Notable Features: Blanco Beach Bar & Hostel is where the social scene truly shines on Koh Phi Phi. While the facilities might not be the most modern or luxurious, the atmosphere is where it excels. The beach bar is the epicenter of social activity, hosting lively events and parties that make it easy to connect with other traveler’s. If you’re here for the social buzz and beachside fun, Blanco’s is a top pick. Just keep in mind that while the party is great, the hostel’s facilities could use some improvement.
Food Spots
- Papaya Restaurant- A top spot for enjoying authentic Thai cuisine. From spicy curries to fresh seafood, the food here is flavorful and reasonably priced, making it a great choice for both lunch and dinner.
- The Mango Tree- Perfect for a relaxed meal with a view. This restaurant serves a blend of Thai and international dishes, and the atmosphere makes it a nice place to unwind after a day of exploring.
- Illuzion- Known more for its entertainment than its food, Illuzion offers a unique dining experience with nightly shows and performances. The food is decent, but the real appeal is the lively atmosphere and the chance to enjoy some great entertainment.
Worthwhile Activities
- Snorkeling Around Maya Bay- While Maya Bay itself can be crowded, snorkeling in the surrounding waters offers a chance to see vibrant marine life and escape the main tourist trail for a bit.
- Explore Koh Phi Phi’s Hidden Coves- Grab a kayak or longtail boat and seek out some of the island’s quieter beaches and coves. These hidden spots provide a serene retreat from the more crowded areas and are perfect for a peaceful day.
- Climb to the Phi Phi Viewpoint- If you’re up for a bit of a hike, the Phi Phi Viewpoint delivers stunning panoramic views of the island and the surrounding sea. It’s a rewarding trek that offers some of the best photo ops on the island.
Nights Out
Koh Phi Phi’s nightlife is where the island truly excels. The evenings here are filled with energy and excitement, making it a prime destination for those looking to party.
Reggae Bar- For a night out that’s both lively and enjoyable, Reggae Bar is a must-visit. The place has a relaxed vibe with great music, fun games, and a welcoming crowd. It’s one of the best spots to soak up the island’s nightlife.
Slinky’s Beach Bar- Another top choice for a night of dancing and drinks. Slinky’s offers a great mix of music and entertainment, with beach parties that extend into the early hours.
Koh Samui 7.1/10
Koh Samui, where the beaches are packed, the prices are high, and the vibe screams “holiday resort” rather than “backpacker paradise.” It’s the kind of place where you’ll find more sunburnt tourists and overpriced cocktails than authentic Thai experiences. Sure, the island has its moments, but if you’re after the real deal, there are better spots in Thailand.
Hostel Recommendations
Lub D
Blends the vibe of a modern hotel with the social aspects of a hostel. It offers a fantastic pool, impeccably clean facilities, and a relaxed social environment. While it’s a great place to meet people, the crowd leans more toward holidaymakers than the typical backpacker community. The location is quite central, but it also places you near the heart of tourist-heavy areas. A comfortable choice if you’re open to spending a bit more for the amenities.
Food Spots
- Green Bird- This little spot offers a taste of authentic Thai food without the hefty price tag. It’s one of the few places on the island where you can still eat like a local. Try the massaman curry – it’s a winner.
- Ninja Crepes- A bit of a hidden gem, this place serves up delicious and affordable Thai food. The portions are generous, and the flavors are spot on. It’s a nice break from the pricey beachfront restaurants.
- The Hut Café- This café serves some of the best local dishes at reasonable prices. The seafood is fresh, and the service is friendly. A great spot for breakfast or lunch.
Worthwhile Activities
- Secret Buddha Garden- Tucked away in the hills, this place is a little sanctuary of statues and greenery. It’s quirky, peaceful, and far from the madding crowd of Chaweng Beach. A bit of a hike to get there, but worth it for the serenity.
- Pink Elephant Water Park- If you’re in the mood for something different, spend a day at this water park. It’s fun, it’s silly, and it’s a good way to beat the heat. Plus, you won’t find many tourists here.
- Koh Samui Cat Café- Because who doesn’t love sipping a coffee while surrounded by cats? It’s a quirky little spot and a great place to unwind after a day of exploring.
Nights Out
The nightlife in Koh Samui is lively, but it doesn’t quite compare to the other islands. You’ll find plenty of bars and clubs, but it’s a bit more family-friendly, which can take the edge off if you’re looking for a wild night.
Ark Bar Beach Club- This is where most of the action happens. It’s loud, it’s lively, and it’s got the typical beach party vibe. If you’re in the mood to let loose and don’t mind a bit of a touristy scene, it can be fun.
The Green Mango Club- A staple of Samui’s nightlife, this place has been around forever. It’s a bit of a meat market, but the music is decent, and it’s open late.
Coco Tams- For a more chilled evening, head to Coco Tams. It’s got bean bags on the beach, fire shows, and a relaxed vibe. Perfect for a few cocktails as the sun sets.
Koh Tao 9.5/10

The beds are comfy, and the facilities are kept clean. The location is prime – close to Sairee Beach and all the main action spots, but just far enough to get a good night’s sleep. The staff are super helpful and always ready with tips on the best places to eat and visit.

- The Factory Café: A great choice for breakfast or brunch, known for its high-quality coffee and smoothie bowls. It’s slightly pricier than some local spots, but the quality makes it worth the extra baht.
- Barracuda Restaurant & Bar: Perfect for a night out with excellent seafood, especially the fresh catch of the day. The ambiance is relaxed yet refined, providing a nice dinner experience without overspending.
Worthwhile Activities
- Shooting Range- Ever wanted to test your aim? The Koh Tao Shooting Range offers a unique way to blow off some steam. It’s not something you’d expect to find on a tropical island, but that’s what makes it all the more fun. Just be safe and listen to the instructors.
- Koh Tao Jungle Adventure- Forget the beaches for a day and head into the jungle. There are some incredible hiking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints. It’s a great way to see a different side of the island and get a bit of exercise in the process.
- Free-diving Course- If scuba diving feels too mainstream, try freediving. It’s all about breath-holding and diving deep without tanks. Koh Tao is a great place to learn, with several schools offering courses that are both challenging and rewarding.
Nights Out
Koh Tao might be small, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to nightlife. The island knows how to throw a party, and there’s something happening every night of the week.
Koh Tao Pub Crawl- If you want to meet people and get a taste of the island’s nightlife, this is the way to do it. The crawl takes you to several bars, includes a bunch of free shots, and ends at a beach party. It’s wild, it’s fun, and it’s a rite of passage for many travelers.
Koh Tao Jungle Party- Held once a month, this is one of the best parties in all of Asia. Imagine a massive rave in the middle of the jungle with top DJs, amazing light shows, and a crowd that’s ready to dance until sunrise. It’s an experience you won’t forget anytime soon.
Fishbowl Beach Bar- For a more relaxed night out, head to Fishbowl. It’s right on Sairee Beach, with bean bags, live music, and a great selection of cocktails. Perfect for winding down after a day of adventures.
Pai 9.7/10
A town of hippies nestled amongst miles of untouched forrest. Pai is one of the most unique and welcoming places I visited. The town is small yet packed to the brim with restaurants and bars, each as wacky as the next. Pai will always have a place in my heart due to its stunning wildlife, slow-paced nature, and AMAZING FOOD! The only downside is that if you’re the sort of person that can’t sit still, there may be a lack of activities to keep your mind busy. In saying that, there are countless spots to hike and enjoy the stunning views.
Hostel Recommendations
Circus
There’s some places that can’t be accurately describes from a rating system and Circus Hostel defiantly falls into this category. Even though this hostel is somewhat rough around the edges, the vibes are just immaculate and the pool/ bar area combined with that view makes for a great experience. Beds were comfy and clean, however, the shower facilities were some of the worst I saw in my entire trip.
Food Spots
- Na’s Kitchen- Make sure you are there early to avoid large queues. These lovely old ladies cook all the food in an open style kitchen right in front of you. Food was honestly exceptional. I’d recommend the Massaman Curry and Spring Rolls.
- Banh Banh Pun Pai Sandwich Vietnam- Another place that going early is key. You can’t sit down so queueing isn’t an issue, however, you may have to wait upwards of an hour if you don’t get your order in on time. Sorry to all my Vietnam fans but this was probably the best Bahn Mi I had in the whole of Asia.
- Night Market- Goes without saying that night markets offer some of the best food in any area you stop but this ones really special. Full marks if you can find Big Mama’s pork stand.
Worthwhile Activities
- Sun Sets at Two Huts- You’ll notice on this list that not all unusual activities are well kept secrets, you have social media to blame for that I guess. Sunset at Two Huts can only be described as wholesome. The best spots get taken early so I would recommend getting there a couple of hours early. Best to go when there is live singers on as-well.
- Tipsy Tubing- Tipsy or Jungle Tubing is probably what Pai is best known for in terms of activities. Floating from party to party on an inflatable ring with hundereds of other people is 100% as fun as it sounds. Now there is some debate whether Jungle or Tipsy tubing is better. If I was to weigh in I’d probably say same same, just better to go with the one provided by your hostel just out of convenience.
- Paradise Bar- Tucked away in the outer edges of the town, paradise bar in what is says on the tin. One of the best pool tables I’ve seen in a bar throughout my whole trip. The whole place kind of feel like a circus especially when the staff start doing what hippies do best; being unnecessarily good at balancing and throwing various miscellaneous objects. Make sure to try some of their special shakes whilst chilling in the stream behind the bar.
Nights Out
Pai is one of the few places that requires no drinking to have a good night. Perfect mixture of lively and chilled bars, no recommendations required for this place you’re better off just walking around and finding a vibe that fits you.
Sun Set Bar: The only place that stays open until the early hours. This place surprising has some of the better music I heard in Asia, as well as having some nice outdoor chill spots.
Jungle Party: Once a week they shuttle everyone from town to this ‘jungle’ location. Besides being hosted in more of a clearing in a forrest than a jungle, this party is actually a must-go. Now it doesn’t compare much to the sites of Koh Pahganan but has its own special charm.
Phuket (Patong Beach) 6.8/10
Patong Beach in Phuket is the epitome of tourist central, where the streets are always packed, and the beach is just one part of the chaotic scene. If you’re after a high-octane, action-packed holiday with all the tourist trimmings, you’re in the right place. The beach itself is pleasant enough, but it’s surrounded by a sea of souvenir shops and street vendors. The real highlight is the nightlife, which is big and boisterous but has a bit of a seedy side with an abundance of neon lights and brothels. It’s a classic tourist spot with its fair share of highs and lows, but it might not be everyone’s idea of paradise.
